Metter and Candler County, with three interchanges on Interstate 16 inside the county, offer exceptional advantages in all critical areas of business operations. Eight motor carriers serve Metter with both pickup and delivery services available. While direct access to I-16 through Georgia Highway 23/121 is simple and quick, other Georgia highways also traverse the region, including 46 and 129.

Metter Municipal Airport, located near I-16, provides general aviation service for the area on its 3600-foot, paved and lighted runway. Commercial services are easily accessed by I-16 and I-95 towards Savannah. Three carriers there provide 13 daily flights to and from Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport.

Industry
 

Educational examination of the total Candler area reveals that the vast majority of the labor force has a high school diploma. However, the highest percentage as distributed by age shows that the majority of 20 to 24 year-olds possess an associate's degree or some college education.

The Metter-Candler County Industrial Park, located within the city limits of Metter in the southwest corner near the intersection of I-16 and Georgia Highway 23/121, was designed as a 111-acre industrial zone. The park has 49 acres of available space remaining. Usage of remaining acreage is negotiable.

The Metter-Candler County Industrial Park has several major tenants. For example, Pepsi Cola Company operates a distribution center out of the park which delivers products throughout the surrounding area. USF Holland Trucking Company, a major plus for area businesses, also operates a terminal in our park.

Wallace Computer Services considers the people of the area one of its strongest assets. The local plant is part of the nationally-known company based in Lisle, Illinois, which is one of the country's largest and fastest growing providers of products used for information management and solutions. Nationwide, the company achieved $862 million in sales during 1996; locally, the plant, which produces business forms and labels, has clientele such as Sears and American Express.

Agribusiness is big in Candler County. Cropland totals in the 60,000-acre range, with gross farm values for the county topping the $38 million figure annually. Major contributors include pork and poultry growers, surpassed only by crop proceeds

from cotton, peanuts, tobacco and Vidalia (TM) Onions. Although the area has a diversified agricultural base, cotton is still king in Candler County. With two local cotton gins, Candler Gin and Warehouse and Growers Gin and Warehouse, cotton is the number on acreage crop in the county. Locally, agriculture is a respected profession as well as a link to national and world markets.

Hendrix Produce, a local grower, engages in packaging and shipping both fruits and vegetables. This thriving Candler County agribusiness specializes in Vidalia onions, melons and sweet potatoes. Similarly, Warren Peanut Company operates out of Candler County and represents Cargill Peanut Products from Albany, Georgia, and GFA Peanut Association in Camilla, Georgia, as the local buyer for the peanut industry.
