Dear Metter Citizen or Business Owner,
The State of Georgia is requiring that the City of Metter provide an inventory list which identifies the types of water service lines (pipes) which are underground inside the city. This request by the State will confirm the locations of galvanized or lead piping within the City.
The City of Metter owns and is responsible for each water meter and for the lines on the City side of the meter. Each property owner is responsible for the water line running from the meter to the home or property it services.
In the coming months, City staff will be working to comply with this State request. To do so, City staff will access the pipes on each side of the meters by digging around the meter only as much as is necessary to determine the type of pipe which services the property. Also, City staff may personally interview customers and may need to access the outside juncture where a water line enters a building. However, at no time should it become necessary for a City employee to enter a building.
Throughout this process, some minor disruption of plantings or landscaping may be unavoidable. Should that become the case, City staff will make every reasonable effort to return property as close to the original condition as possible. We will sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as we meet the responsibility of complying with this requirement from the State of Georgia.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the City of Metter Public Works Department between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday at 912/685-7845 or 912/314-3821. Alternatively, you may email Public Works Director James McCray at jmccray@cityofmetterga.gov.
